Kelly Thai And Lao Cuisine - Powell Information

Kelly Thai And Lao Cuisine - Powell brings the flavors of Southeast Asia to Southeast Portland, offering an appealing dining option for anyone interested in Thai and Lao cooking. Located at 17150 SE Powell Blvd, Portland, OR 97236, United States, this restaurant sits in an area where neighborhood eateries play an important role in the local food scene. Its focus on two closely related culinary traditions makes it especially interesting for diners who enjoy aromatic herbs, savory sauces, fresh vegetables, and dishes with a satisfying balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy flavors.

Thai and Lao cuisines share several ingredients, but each has its own character. Thai cooking is widely known for fragrant curries, stir-fried noodles, and carefully balanced seasonings. Lao cuisine, meanwhile, often emphasizes fresh herbs, lime, toasted rice powder, and bold, tangy flavors. That combination gives a restaurant like Kelly Thai And Lao Cuisine - Powell plenty of room to offer something beyond the usual Asian takeout experience. Diners exploring the menu may want to look for traditional preparations that highlight these differences rather than sticking only to familiar favorites.

For anyone browsing the food selection, dishes such as pad Thai, green curry, larb, and papaya salad are useful examples of what makes these cuisines distinctive, although specific availability should be confirmed with the restaurant. Pad Thai offers a familiar combination of noodles, savory seasoning, and contrasting textures, while green curry typically delivers a richer experience through coconut milk, herbs, and chilies. Larb, a traditional Lao minced-meat salad, takes a different direction with lime, fresh herbs, and toasted rice powder. These flavors demonstrate why Southeast Asian food can be both comforting and exciting.

The location along SE Powell Boulevard also makes the restaurant relevant to people living or working in East Portland. Whether planning a casual lunch, picking up dinner after work, or exploring a different cuisine with friends, convenience often matters just as much as the food itself. Before visiting, checking current opening hours, ordering options, and menu availability can help avoid surprises.

When reading customer reviews of Kelly Thai And Lao Cuisine - Powell, it is worth paying attention to comments about seasoning, portion sizes, food temperature, and service consistency. Spice levels are particularly important with Thai and Lao dishes, since personal preferences can vary considerably. A helpful staff member who can explain ingredients or recommend an appropriate heat level can make the dining experience more comfortable, especially for first-time visitors.

Atmosphere is another consideration when choosing a neighborhood restaurant. Some diners prefer a relaxed setting for a leisurely meal, while others value efficient ordering and convenient takeout. For this Powell Boulevard location, recent customer photos and reviews can provide a clearer picture of the dining space, presentation, and overall service experience, particularly when deciding between eating on-site and taking a meal home.

What People's Say About Place

We had their red curry with beef; pad Thai with shrimp; and fried rice with crab. The food was legit and soo good. They offer different ‘spicy levels’ and we decided on extra spicy- the spice was perfect, it didn’t overpower the flavor, but it was definitely fire. Delicious. They gave large portions, and needless to say, we had to take a walk afterwards to stave off the fat-dog syndrome :) The lady at the window was so nice, pleasant and cheerful. Definitely had leftovers, but looking forward to going back and trying more of their offerings.

Rewriting my last review because I don't think my words expressed truely how special this place is. There dishes are phenomenal. Every time every bite is excellent. Vibrant food that warms the heart and soul. Thank you for putting so much love into your dishes. I've tried so many other places for pineapple fried rice nobody comes close. This place is a hidden gem. Very kind people.

Lao cuisine was not on my radar until a few years ago. I fell in love with it and then my favorite local Lao/Mien cart closed :( So when Kelly Thai and Lao opened at the Chop Chop cart pod, I was pretty much ecstatic. When 21SG Foodie Singapura was at the Gresham cart pod, I used to order their fried chicken wings. I think the wings here might be even better! The menu hits all the right notes. Ingredients taste fresh and vibrant. Portions are generous, too! Nice assortment of appetizers -- delicious egg rolls, crab rangoon, the wings... (did I mention the wings?) My go-to dish is pad prik king (green beans with meat and bell peppers). Everyone's favorite Thai dishes are available here, as well as an assortment of Lao specialties, with five degrees of spiciness. If you're a fellow spicy food masochist, this place rules. I just tried the Nam Khao (5 spicy!) and will absolutely be ordering it again. I keep meaning to try more of the menu, but it's hard to get away from the dishes I already know I love here. Kelly and the older gentleman that run this cart are lovely, positive people. I'm really happy this cart opened up. Chop Chop is a really nice cart pod! Totally worth braving the Powell / 174th construction mess.

Had a terrible experience with this cart and the handling of the mistake was less than appropriate. My friend and I both ordered meals with tofu in them. Both ended up with chicken in them, I've been vegetarian for 32 years. The meals were replaced but the cashier didn't really acknowledge the mistake but rather questioned that we wanted Tofu. The order wasn't written down properly or the mistake wouldn't have happened. The order was remade but the remake was lacking many vegetables and was mostly noodles and little tofu. I haven't had this happen to a meal in years.

You're gonna wait a hefty minute for your food but PLEASE BE PATIENT. It's so worth it- it's so full of love. 10/10 Crab Fried Rice Green Curry

Grew up in Portland and there used to be some great Thai places. Since pandemic, all my old favorites closed down and I’ve had many disappointing experiences with places I’ve tried. Went here today because my original choice was closed and was pleasantly surprised! Some of the best pad kee mao I’ve had in some time, and very spicy!

New food carts off Powell. Need more attention so we can get more options. Go here. Great food. Reasonable prices.

I’ve tried several dishes from Kelly’s, but the standout is Kelly’s Fried Rice! I eat a ton of thai food and have often found that certain places make the best version of a particular dish or category. For instance, I go to certain thai restaurants for their curry versus other for their noodles. When it comes to Kelly’s - the fried rice is on another level.
